Van drivers go to our retail donors (grocery stores) to pick up donations, bring them back to the Food Pantry and help unload them. Hours are varied but are primarily Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and/or Friday mornings. You do not need to commit to all these days. Van drivers will begin by riding along with one of our current drivers to learn the routes and procedures. Estimated time involved: 1-2 hours per day. Requirements: valid CT drivers license, the ability to lift heavy boxes (possibly 50 lbs.), and the ability to make a commitment to a regular schedule.

Field trip volunteers work in pairs to help run the field trips program for Pre-K through 5th grade classes from the Greater New Haven area. You don’t need any prior experience teaching or working with children, just a love of reading and a desire to help a child succeed. The Blackstone offers two teen advisory groups that provide community service hours. These groups vote on books to purchase for the library, assist with programs, and complete other projects that help benefit the library. Our Teen Advisory Group, for grades 9-12, meets on the third Thursday of the month from 3:30-4:30pm. Our Junior Teen Advisory Group, for grades 6-8, meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 4-5pm. Branford Compassion Club receives no municipal support and depends solely on the generosity of its supporters and various fundraising events to sustain its operation. Socializing our cats
Branford Compassion Club
Socializers are charged with working with feral cats or those having difficulty adjusting to life at the shelter. It involves working quietly and patiently in prescribed ways with those cats that have been designated as potentially difficult to adopt. This is done only under supervision of and as scheduled by the socializing coordinator. The goal is to acclimate the cat to human contact and build its trust and confidence so that it can be transported and vetted without difficulty and will be able to adjust to a new home environment with relative ease. Mentors are paired one-on-one with our campers to ensure their safety and fun the week of camp. Mentors serve as role models for our campers by modeling and actively participating in all camp programming including fishing, kayaking, swimming, arts and crafts, and more. Mentors earn 40 hour of community service for volunteering!

Connecticut Hospice Homecare Volunteers have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients who have terminal illnesses. The type of homecare visits are as follows:Respite: Sit with patient while caregiver runs errands, has doctor appointments, etc. This will be in a private home.Enrichment: Many patients are very lonely and would like to talk, play cards, have a book or newspaper read to them, etc. They may be in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living or private home. The Soundview Family YMCA team, in collaboration with the Branford Board of Education, is teaching your children to be safe in and around the water. The Y’s Safety Around Water program teaches children of all ages and from all backgrounds that water can be fun, not scary. Knowing how to be safe around water is one of the most important life skills we can teach our children - it gives them confidence, and can save their lives. A Swim Instructor Aid is responsible for assuring the safety, well being and enjoyment of all participants in his or her class. The Aid is responsible for assisting assigned instructors as they prepare and teach classes in accordance with YMCA of the USA guidelines and procedures. This includes but is not limited to demonstrating and correcting individuals so that they learn to the best of their ability and monitoring the environment to ensure that is safe for participants. As an instructor aide, you will be learning how to teach and interact with young children in a responsible manner. You will closely work with instructors to help young swimmers learn new skills and enjoy the water.

Those needing more in-depth help can be referred to library staff or even outside professionals. This is simply to help with basic computer/device questions.

This person is responsible for designing and creating marketing and publicity materials for promoting events, including but not limited to press releases; in-store flyers, signs and displays; website, social media and print advertising and community outreach to maximize public attendance and financial support. BGC holds two fundraising events per year including the annual Plant Sale in May and Scarecrows on the Green in October. Occasionally there could be a third event, e.g. a Garden Tour, usually in June. Members will help distribute posters and post on social media.

Our Tails to Trails program is a dog walking program that offers volunteers the opportunity to bring our shelter dogs to off-site trail locations approved by staff and our dog trainer!In order to become a Tails to Trails volunteer, you must complete our volunteer orientation program in addition to 2 Dog Handling and Safety Classes with our staff dog trainer. You also must be 25 years of age with your own transportation to participate.
